A useful headphone test checks more than whether sound plays. It should confirm channel direction, reveal obvious imbalance, compare low and high frequency output, and show whether stereo information remains distinct. This console groups those checks while keeping each one short enough to stop immediately if anything feels uncomfortable.

Start with Left and Right. Direction must be correct before any other comparison is meaningful. Then run Separation, which alternates a midrange tone between fully panned channels. A stable result should move decisively from one ear to the other. Crossfeed, mono audio, spatial processing, and some accessibility options can intentionally make the result narrower.

Bass and earcup seal

The bass button uses an 80 Hz tone. This frequency is low enough to reveal a poor seal but high enough for many compact headphones and earbuds to reproduce. If one side sounds much weaker, reseat the device. Glasses, hair, worn pads, and mismatched ear tips can create an acoustic leak that reduces bass without any electronic fault.

Do not keep increasing the volume to force a deep tone to appear. Small phone speakers and some lightweight earbuds naturally roll off bass. The goal is to compare the two sides under the same conditions, not to prove that a product reaches a marketing specification.

Treble and frequency sweep

The treble check plays 8 kHz at a lower generated gain because high tones can feel sharper. Both sides should have a similar character, but small differences in ear position can change the result. The sweep moves from low bass toward high treble. Listen for abrupt dropouts, rattles, buzzing, or a consistent side-to-side difference rather than expecting every frequency to sound equally loud.

Human hearing is not flat, headphone response is not flat, and perceived loudness changes dramatically with frequency. Many adults cannot hear the highest part of the sweep. That is normal and does not identify the cause. This page is a hardware and routing utility, not a diagnostic hearing exam.

Check balance carefully

The balance slider offsets the manual Left and Right checks. Keep it at Equal for a standard test. If a centered recording usually seems off-center, use the dedicated balance challenge before changing permanent system settings. A slight mismatch may come from fit, hearing, source material, or the device itself.

For the cleanest result, use a quiet room, disable equalizers and spatial effects, and compare wired playback when possible. Then enable your usual processing one setting at a time. That sequence reveals whether a surprising result comes from the headphones or from the signal path feeding them.
