Left & Right Sound Test

The Left, Both, and Right controls above provide a quick left right sound test without installing software. A correct left right test sends Left only to the left output, Right only to the right output, and Both to a stable position in the center.

This audio test checks left and right routing from the browser to the final earcup or speaker. Use it as a left right audio test after changing cables, audio interfaces, drivers, Bluetooth devices, or system sound settings.

What a correct result sounds like

On headphones, the named side should be direct and easy to identify while the unused side stays quiet. With speakers, both ears naturally hear sound through the room, but only the named cabinet should produce the tone. Both should create a clear phantom center between the two speakers.

How to interpret an incorrect result

If Left and Right are swapped, check headphone orientation, detachable cable labels, speaker wiring, and software output mapping. If both channel buttons sound centered, turn off mono audio, crossfeed, spatial audio, and virtual surround. If both channels come from one ear or speaker, compare another source before replacing hardware.

Check software, adapters, and Bluetooth

Windows sound utilities, DAC or audio-interface routing, virtual mixers, and gaming software can remap outputs. A loose plug or incompatible adapter can also combine channels. Bluetooth earbuds may change to a call profile when their microphone is active, so close microphone-using apps and reconnect before testing again.

Read stereo, mono, and phase results

Stereo playback can place sounds at different positions between the two channels. Mono sends the same signal to both channels, so it should sound centered. The left-to-right sweep makes that movement continuous and is useful when single channel tones feel too abrupt.

For two speakers, the in-phase tone should usually create a firmer center and stronger bass than the out-of-phase tone. Headphones may make the out-of-phase version feel unusually wide or less stable. Room reflections and soundbar processing can reduce the contrast.

Use the right test for your setup

The same signal can behave differently in sealed headphones, a two-speaker room, or a processed soundbar. Start with channels, then use the check that matches what you heard.

Headphone stereo test

Headphones make hard-panned channels easy to identify. Check orientation, cable labels, earcup seal, and system balance before judging the driver. Gaming headsets may also add virtual surround, so run the first pass with it disabled.

Sit the same distance from both speakers. Confirm which cabinet plays, then compare the phantom center and phase controls. If one side is near a wall, room gain can make it sound louder even when the electrical levels match.

A centered tone should not pull strongly to either side. Keep the page slider and system balance centered for the first check. If the offset remains, reverse the headphones or swap speaker connections to see whether the problem follows the hardware.

At 100 percent separation, Left and Right should be clearly distinct. Move the control toward zero to hear the stereo image narrow. If every setting sounds centered, check mono accessibility settings, crossfeed, spatial audio, Bluetooth call mode, and soundbar virtualization.
